George Gruhn didn't design a custom Martin 0000-size guitar with Vince Gill in mind, but our custom 0000-28 fit Vince's style perfectly, and it's his main acoustic stage guitar now. Vince's "quad-ought" is part of our collection of special 0000 and dreadnought Martin models, custom-built by Martin to our specifications.It started with a special Martin 0000-18 with Golden Era specs to commemorate Gruhn Guitars' 35th anniversary. The "quad-ought" 0000 size is a 16"-wide body, with 000-style lines (rather than the thick-waisted dreadnought shape) and 000 depth, and it provides a unique combination of power and tonal complexity. The limited run was not even completed before some of the most desirable facets of those guitars - especially the Adirondack spruce top - were incorporated into a wider range of custom 0000 and D-size Martins.
Adirondack spruce (eastern red spruce) is the critical component in the sound of classic prewar Martins. We've also spec'd our 0000s with a slightly wider 1 3/4" nut width and a modified V-neck to recreate the feel and facility of vintage Martins. Our custom D-28s and HD-28s have the "high X" bracing of the prewar D-28, and the wider nut and V-neck are optional on those models.
